  Founder Message ...

THERE are tens of thousands of people out there, especially older and single Western men (who are divorced, separated or widowers), who know in their hearts that there must be something better than the thankless, dull, boring existence they are now living.

Most simply don’t know about the alternatives available to them or how to make the break. They do not realise just how different, interesting and rewarding their life could be in another place and another culture. And they wrongly assume they could not afford it anyway.

This is the great tragedy - that they have no idea how easy and inexpensive (perhaps even ultimately profitable) it can be to take the plunge and make it happen. Yet all they need to do is open their minds and their eyes and take a little time to look.

Smiling Hill in Batam, Indonesia, may not be the answer for everyone - but it is a great place to begin exploring some of the opportunities and pitfalls of living in another country with a fascinatingly different culture, and to share the experience of others who already have been through such a life-changing process.

Those of us involved in developing and operating Smiling Hill are a group of like minded over 40s who started out to create an “ideal” lifestyle for ourselves -- a low cost and convenient base where we could truly enjoy living permanently or semi-permanently in South-East Asia.

The lifestyle aspect is still supremely important to us but as we have progressed it has become clear that we also are creating an outstanding investment vehicle generating income and asset growth for the investor members of our group.

Most of us also are now married to lovely Indonesian partners and many of us are actively involved in helping extended families or Indonesian friends, acquaintances and members of the local community to improve their lives.

There are still opportunities for others to become involved at Smiling Hill and elsewhere in Batam as visitors, residents or investors or all of the above.
